If you’re exploring a simpler, more intentional way of life, you’re in the right place.
This page is a small window into my story—what shaped this journey, and why I write for women who want less clutter, less waste, and more clarity in everyday life.
I’m Joyce Tan, the voice behind Less with Maya. I write for thoughtful, independent women who want a home and lifestyle that feel lighter, calmer, and easier to maintain—without losing warmth, beauty, or meaning.
Less with Maya is for women who feel drawn to simplicity, sustainability, and a more intentional way of living.
You may be trying to clear physical clutter, reduce the mental load of daily life, or make better use of your time, money, and energy. You may care about living well with less, creating an eco-friendlier home, and making space for what truly supports your wellbeing.
That’s the perspective behind this site: not extreme minimalism, but practical, grounded simplicity that fits into real life.

My path to minimalism didn’t start with a design trend or a picture-perfect home. It grew quietly out of real life.
I trained as an Industrial Engineer, so I’ve always been drawn to efficiency, systems, and problem-solving. Over the past two decades, I’ve worked across engineering, healthcare sales, and small business operations.
Alongside that, I’ve also carried the kind of responsibilities many women manage quietly—caregiving, travel planning, utilities, household administration, and estate matters.
Over time, these experiences showed me something simple but important: life feels heavy when everything competes for your attention.
Simplifying isn’t about deprivation. It’s about making better choices so your resources—time, space, money, and energy—are used with intention.
That is what led me here.
My version of minimalism is not about bare walls or owning as little as possible. It’s about being intentional.
I’m drawn to choosing quality over quantity, creating spaces that are easier to care for, and building habits that support a calmer, more sustainable life. I’m also naturally drawn to Zen-inspired environments—spaces that feel peaceful rather than overstimulating.
On this site, I share reflections, practical ideas, and lessons from my own ongoing process.
I’m not writing from a pedestal. I’m writing from lived experience—testing, learning, adjusting, and paying attention to what truly makes life feel lighter.
If you’re looking for a thoughtful and realistic way to simplify your life, that’s what I hope you’ll find here.

Why “Maya” is Part of the Story
You’ll notice that this site is called Less with Maya.
Ms. Maya is a fictional figure I created to help tell this story. She reflects parts of my own experience—a professional woman navigating work, responsibility, caregiving, and personal change, while quietly longing for a simpler, more intentional life.
Writing through Maya allows me to express ideas that are personal, yet widely shared.
She isn’t separate from me, but a storytelling lens—one that helps bridge my reflections with your experience.
Why You Can Trust My Perspective
I’m not here to offer a perfect formula for minimalist living.
What I share comes from my own lived journey—through experiments, mistakes, and small realizations along the way—shaped by:
This combination shapes how I see minimalism: not as an aesthetic to achieve, but as a practical, sustainable way to live with more clarity and less friction.
